Back in 2016, one afternoon in October I was wandering around upper side of Zagreb, taking photos with a friend. We met a woman that was fascinated with our fashion combinations, recommending us cute caffè nearby, called Velvet. As she seemed as a person with a good taste, we decided to give it a chance and wend immediately to find it. It wasn't difficult to find, as it is placed at the top of one of Zagreb's most beautiful streets. I always remember the first impressions, be it considering people or places, so in this case the thing that got imprinted in my mind was the parfume of old roses mixed with warmth and discreet sound of crowd chatting.
The interior would best be described as extravagant, decorated by Saša Šekoranja, a famous floral artist and set designer. The first room is lighter, with decoration in the middle, visible of Saša's unique style, with walls covered with minimalist abstract paintings in over-the-top ornate frames. Upper room is more private, with sofas made of dark red velvet and the wall covered with book shelves; chandelier in the toilet, an old street lamp standing by the stairs connecting the two rooms, casually stacked antique frames. It is all full of details, yet everything is arranged deliberately and with taste.
As I immediately fell in love with the caffè, it soon became the place where I used to go all the time: when having an appointments or dates, when in waiting for someone else's appointments to finish, or while simply waiting for the room service to clean up the hotel room in the morning. And I always notice with a little smile that the same parfume of old roses is ever-present during all the years that have passed by since the first afternoon spent there.
Un pomeriggio di ottobre nel 2016 stavo girovagando di Zagabria, scattando foto con la amica. Abbiamo incontrato una donna che è rimasta affascinata dal nostro stile, consigliandoci un delizioso caffè lì vicino, chiamato Velvet. Dato che ci sembrava una persona di buon gusto, abbiamo deciso di darle una possibilità e siamo andate subito a trovarla. Non è stato difficile trovarlo, dato che si trova in cima a una delle strade più belle di Zagabria. Ricordo sempre le prime impressioni, sia che si tratti di persone o di luoghi, quindi in questo caso la cosa che mi è rimasta impressa in mente è stato il profumo delle rose antiche mescolato al calore e al suono discreto delle chiacchiere della folla.
L'interno potrebbe essere meglio descritto come stravagante, decorato da Saša Šekoranja, un famoso artista floreale e designer. La prima stanza è più leggera, con decorazioni al centro, visibili nello stile unico di Saša, con pareti ricoperte da dipinti astratti minimalisti in cornici elaborate esagerate. La stanza superiore è più riservata, con divani in velluto rosso scuro e la parete ricoperta da scaffali per libri; lampadario nel bagno, un vecchio lampione accanto alla scala che collega le due stanze, cornici antiche impilate alla rinfusa. È tutto ricco di dettagli, eppure tutto è organizzato con cura e con gusto.
Mi sono subito innamorata del caffè e presto è diventato il posto dove andavo sempre: quando avevo appuntamenti, quando aspettavo che finissero gli appuntamenti di qualcun altro, o semplicemente mentre aspettavo che finisse il servizio nella camera d'albergo la mattina. E noto sempre che lo stesso profumo di rose antiche è sempre presente in tutti gli anni trascorsi dal primo pomeriggio trascorso lì.
